About the artist
I’m Andrew Ignatius, a self-taught artist based in Glasgow. Until a few years ago, I didn’t really think of myself as an artist.
I started painting at 37, at my kitchen table, and it quickly became an important part of my life. I originally turned to art as a form of mindfulness - somewhere to put my attention when my head was particularly noisy. Painting gives me a rare opportunity to stop analysing and start making. Inevitably, some of that internal noise has found its way onto the canvas too.
I’m drawn to faces, people, and moments that carry some kind of feeling. I love strong colour, heavy lines, strange proportions, texture and paintings that retain some of the mess and energy of making them. I’m much more interested in how something feels than whether it looks perfect.
Everything here started with me sitting at a kitchen table and deciding to paint.
I like to take pictures of myself holding my finished work. In the age of AI, proof of human creation is more important than ever. And proof of human error is more valuable still.
